TOTAL COST OF CARE
Total Cost of Care and Resource Use
Since 2014, MHI has been one of six Regional Healthcare Improvement Collaboratives (RHICs) in a national Total Cost of Care Project. The project is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and led by the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement (NRHI). In addition to regional comparisons, the newly released report provides price, resource use and cost comparisons across larger St. Louis medical groups.
First Steps:
Developing a Shared Understanding of Health Care Costs and Utilization in St. Louis
Report Highlights
-
Prices vary widely, both across and within regions. In aggregate, prices in St. Louis were below those of the other regions.
-
Differences in prices and resource use drive differences in cost. Providers with lower prices may use more resources to provide care.
-
While in aggregate costs were below average in St. Louis, component cost for outpatient services and prescription drugs were above average, driven by higher utilization.
