Our Work With the Community

MHI is working with physicians, public health researchers and other community leaders to better understand trends in disease and treatment across our region. Through this work, we hope to learn about the rates of certain common conditions such as diabetes and asthma, how often patients are receiving recommended care for these and other conditions and whether patients are seeking care too late for it to be most effective.

For its first look at our community, MHI has focused on four areas:

  • Chronic conditions
  • Primary care and prevention
  • Women and infant health
  • Patient safety and missed opportunities

The last section examines situations where processes did not perform at their best and patients potentially could have received care that was safer, higher quality or less expensive.

MHI’s next goal is to work with its Board of Directors, Physician Leadership Council and Community Health Advisors to establish goals for improvement.

MHI believes in the power of people working together and using information to achieve change. MHI brings together community leaders to improve health. It also gathers information on how many people in our region have certain diseases, how often they visit doctors and hospitals and the kind of care they receive.

In July, MHI will convene business, health care and other community leaders from across the region for a half-day meeting. During the event, those who attend will determine one disease that will serve as the first focus of an ongoing, shared effort to improve health in the St. Louis region. The results of the questionnaire above will be shared at the Summer Summit and used to help attendees agree on a focus area.

Those who complete the questionnaire will be entered into a drawing to win one of five $50 gift cards to purchase gasoline, clothing or electronics.
